Memphis Wrestling 5.13.06
*Cory Maclin and Jerry Lawler opened the show as hosts. They promote “Raw” vs “Smackdown”—
Lawler vs “Pirate” Paul Burchill- for tonight at the Southhaven Arena. Lawler was wearing a red
RAW t-shirt.
*After a commercial break, Maclin comes out with a blue Smackdown t-shirt. Next up is a Shock
interview, which is better than his usual rants.
*Shock beat Tatoo [yes, this is how they spell his name on TV] with a chokeslam and Steiner
recliner. During the middle of the bout, Brian Christopher’s music started playing [Shock vs
Christopher tonight] and Tatoo almost got the roll up pin. Not a bad match considering the two guys
involved.
*Brian Christopher phone interview was up next challenging Shock.
*Nate The Rat came out for an interview. Nate is doing a Elvis singing with a guitar gimmick. Nate is
good in small doses, but this has got old. Lawler interviews him and Nate says he is doing a Mother’
s Day song, but out comes Grady Watson who also had interrupted him last week. Watson has
been a babyface manager here for awhile coming out with Hillbillys and feuding vs Lawler & his valet
Renee. Nate [and I know you seen this coming] hit Grady with his guitar, which did not break and it
took Grady about 10 seconds to sell the move. But..it looked like Grady got hardway after he
bumped [if that is what you call it??] Grady Watson vs Nate The Rat is added for tonight.
*Southern Tag Team Champions’ music plays, but Kevin White and Dustin “5” Starr do not come
out. Cameras go backstage and Starr has been hit with a chair and juicing [which looked like
vampire blood]. Too Kool 2 [Flex and Tim Grind] come out and state that it looks like a handicap
match vs White/Starr tonight, since Starr is out. Not sure what is up with Starr, but heard he had
food poison. Starr is one of the upcoming stars of Memphis and this area. Real good worker and
has a great look.
*Too Kool 2 beat Edrick Hines & Drew Donovan. Too Kool got the heat on Hines with Donovan
getting the hot tag. Donovan then messed up a move off the ropes with Too Kool 2 doing a finisher
on them. Flex DVDed him with Tim coming off the top rope with a elbow smash. Flex & Tim are
doing a 2Cool gimmick [obvious; huh??] as they were associated with Brian Christopher at one
time. They are good workers and usually the highlight of the show with tons of charisma coming
from Flex during his interviews..which end with the catch phrase “That’s the bizness dawg!!”.
*Too Kool were yelling there was going to be a handicap match tonight vs Kevin White for the belts.
White came out to say that Starr would not be there, but that he had a partner to help him defend
the belts. Bill Dundee then came out as his partner and did an excellent interview to promote the
match.
*Lawler then interviewed Renee & Barbara. The gimmick here is Renee is Lawler’s girlfriend [a
shoot] and Barbara is Renee’s sister. They talked about the ladies battle royal for tonight with the
winner being the new Memphis Ladies Champion. Beth Phoenix sent in an interview. Very good
with her saying she got into wrestling the hardway, not like Renee who slept her way into wrestling.
Renee was fuming and did a very good job. For those that have not seen Lawler’s girlfriend – she
is very good on the mic and is better over all than 90% of the girls in the WWE. Audra then came
out [Audra has been playing Lawler’s maid on some funny video pieces that Lawler sends in when
he is out of town called “Leave It To Lawler”]. Audra is turning face, since Renee and Barbara cut
her hair for flirting with Lawler during one of the “Leave It To Lawler” episodes. They all argued
about who was going to win the battle royal.
*”Pirate” Paul Burchill sent in an interview. Nothing special, but nice to see him talking about Lawler
& Memphis and such. They even played up him losing to Mark Henry on Smackdown last night.
Smackdown runs on the same UPN channel as Memphis Wrestling.
*Derrick King, Stan Lee and “New Era” Johnny Dotson came out with balloons and a birthday cake
celebrating Derrick King’s birthday. King and Lee call themselves “Hot Topic” and even though this
show has some good young talent, King and Lee are probably the two best of the bunch.
*Reggie B Fine/Brickhouse Brown/Mr. America did an interview with Brick doing his old rhymes..
which are still funny and get over here in Memphis.
* Reggie B Fine/Brickhouse Brown/Mr. America beat Derrick King/Stan Lee/Johnny Dotson with
Rashad Dovon, when America pinned Dotson. They got the heat on Fine with America getting a hot
tag. Lee was real good in this bumping his ass all over the place with the babys getting their shine.
America pinned Dotson after everyone went to the floor. Angle is that Dotson is defending his
Memphis Light Weight Title vs America tonight. America is Chris Rocker under a hood who lost a
“loser leave town” a few months back. But…they have not even mentioned it being him, so they are
not doing the typical “come back under a hood” gimmick.
*I am wondering how many of you were thinking?? A cake?? And yes……Brickhouse and Fine put
DK’s face into the cake after the bout. Show went off the air with DK crying with cake on his face
and Dotson yelling about America pinning him.
*Final Note: Real good build up for the show tonight. Lawler was a plus with Macklin on the
commentary…Complete card has “Hillbilly” Jethro vs Pokerface; Nate The Rat vs Grady Watson;
Derrick King/Stan Lee vs Reggie B Fine/Brickhouse Brown; Memphis Lt Wt Title Match: Johnny
Dotson vs Mr. America; 6-Ladies Battle Royal for Memphis Ladies Title: Renee vs Barbara vs Beth
Pheonix vs Audra vs Kara vs Shelly; Memphis Southern Tag Team Title Match: Kevin White/Bill
Dundee vs Too Kool 2; Brian Christopher vs Shock; and Main Event—“Raw” vs “Smackdown” Jerry
Lawler vs Paul Burchill…Will be interesting to see how they draw with middle level WWE name and
just two weeks to push it. As I said though, they did a real good job today…I still wonder after all this
time, Memphis Wrestling does not have a singles Southern Champion?? Why??
